INTRODUCTION TO COSMETOLOGY Cosmo Pathway Grades: 10 Prerequisite: Good attendance Credits: ½ This semester course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles of Cosmetology. Students are introduced to the safety and awareness of servicing the public, familiarization of tools and equipment used in the Cosmetology field, and exploring career and entrepreneurial opportunities. Hands on instruction is utilized to give the student the opportunity to experience haircutting, styling, permanent waving, hair coloring, manicure, pedicure, facial, and acrylic nail application. Students are required to complete a written and oral semester project. COSMETOLOGY I & II Grades: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Above average eye/hand coordination and finger dexterity, ability to work with all types of people, good attendance is mandatory, strong math, reading and science skills are necessary. Credits: 6 credits per year The purpose of this six period, two-year course is to prepare students for the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology Licensing Exam and to meet the 1800-hour requirement for licensure. Students have the opportunity to receive a master license that allows them to choose many career options such as a manicurist, aesthetician, hair stylist, color specialist, etc. The goal is to provide a real work environment where students work on the public to practice and master those skills necessary for success in the workplace. The curriculum includes theory and clinical instruction in professional ethics, sanitation, human anatomy, facials, skin care, makeup application, manicuring, pedicuring, acrylic nails, haircutting, hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, and all phases of hair care. Manikins are provided; however, it is required that students work on clients and teacher assigned partners. Emphasis is also placed on the job seeking/keeping skills, such as effective communication, customer service, teamwork, filling out a job application, building a resume, and interviewing techniques. Students must have or acquire a social security number prior to their junior year (11th grade) in the program. The Nevada State Board of Cosmetology mandates that students be 18 years of age to sit for the written and practical licensing examination. Students are responsible to purchase their own uniform and nametag. Lab fees are due in full upon entering the junior and senior year and no payment plans are available. |
