What is SECTA?
Southeast Career Technical Academy is a four year, accredited, comprehensive state of the art, career-training high school. Students have the opportunity to earn not only a high school diploma, occupational certificate, professional licensure, and college credits.
How do I apply?
Visit the SECTA website at www.webuildfutures.net. Applications are scored on the student’s first semester report card based on grades, citizenship, attendance as well as standardized test scores and transcript. Qualified applicants’ names are then sent to the lottery for selection.
What is the lottery?
A qualified student, from the selection pool, is randomly selected by the lottery by the program/ career area indicated on the student’s application in either their first or second choice area.
How do I know if I have been selected to attend SECTA?
All applicants will be notified of their status by mail through the magnet office approximately by March 20, 2009.
What if I am selected?
If you are selected, you must return your Acceptance Agreement/Letter of intent by the date indicated on the letter. Failure to do so will forfeit your chance to attend SECTA.
What if I am not selected?
If you were qualified and your name was not selected, your name is in the alternate pool of names. You will only be called if a majority of the names chosen in the lottery decline. Students are not assigned a number on the list; it is a pool of names. Please DO NOT call to see where your name is at on the list. That information is not available. If space becomes available we will call you.
What if I was not selected and didn’t qualify?
SECTA is a very competitive high school. A student application is screened/scored on the 1st semester grades, attendance, citizenship, standardized test scores, current math placement and grade. Many times it is a combination of the above factors why a student didn’t qualify.
When do I start my professional career-training program?
SECTA students participate in a two-year professional career-training program beginning in their junior year. This two-year experience prepares college bound students for their major in college or professional career options.
What classes do I take my freshman year?
Freshman students begin earning the necessary academic credits required for graduation. In addition, freshmen take a half-credit preoccupation class entitled Tools for Success and another entitled Freshman Studies.
What classes do I take my sophomore year?
Sophomore students continue earning necessary academic graduation credits. Sophomores take either a one-credit introduction or two semester classes in their chosen career major as indicated on their acceptance agreement.
How long is the school day?
The day begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 1.27 p.m. Students attend a seven-period day. This allows students to get ahead academically for graduation and provides the time necessary for their professional career-training program. SECTA also offers an extended day of up to nine periods, for programs that require a longer school day.
Can I participate in sports?
Yes, if SECTA offers the sport, you must play for SECTA. If we do not, you are eligible to play for your home school.
Are there fees involved?
Yes, there are fees that would be incurred just like any other high school. The Career Technical programs also require additional fees. Please see the fee schedule list.
Do I have to reapply each year?
No, but you must remain in good standing from year to year. This means you must receive passing grades in all classes, maintain good attendance and citizenship.
What does it take to be successful at SECTA?
Students must have a desire to participate in a professional career-training program. They must also have average to above average study habits to participate in the rigorous academic and occupational curriculum. This is a program for those not afraid to be challenged in all areas of education and their future goals.
Application deadline?
All applications must be submitted online by Monday, February 9, 2009. Paper applications must be received by the deadline date.
